UN Security Council Raises Alarm on Escalating Maritime Threats

The UN Security Council has sounded an urgent warning over rising threats to global maritime safety, including growing incidents of piracy and armed robbery reported in 2024. Council members emphasized that secure shipping lanes are vital for economic stability and development.

During a recent high-level debate, the UN Security Council highlighted a sharp increase in maritime security threats, including nearly 150 incidents of piracy and armed robbery around the world in 2024 alone. Officials stressed that threats are no longer limited to traditional piracy, but also include cyber-attacks, drug trafficking, and sophisticated fraudulent activities targeting vessels and port systems. Secure seas were described as fundamental to sustainable development and global economic stability.

Addressing the complex nature of these threats, UN representatives called for stronger international collaboration and improved monitoring to safeguard navigation. Issues ranging from unlawful attacks in the Red Sea to the misuse of artificial intelligence for cyber threats were flagged as critical risks to the integrity of the global shipping system. These growing challenges underscore the need for robust maritime governance and coordinated enforcement across borders.
