Panama Canal Introduces “NetZero Slot” to Boost Decarbonization

The Panama Canal Authority has unveiled a new “NetZero Slot” to support low-emission vessels and incentivize greener transit practices. This marks a major step in aligning maritime operations with global climate targets.
Starting in November 2025, the "Panama Canal Authority (ACP)" will implement a new reservation category called the 'NetZero Slot" for vessels capable of running on alternative low-emission fuels such as green methanol, ammonia, bio-LNG, or bio-LPG. The initiative supports ACP’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Although the vessels don’t have to use these fuels during transit, they must be capable of doing so to qualify. A competitive selection process begins October 3, 2025, for transit dates in early November.
Eligible vessels will receive several benefits including guaranteed 24-hour transit, Just-in-Time service, and more flexible scheduling. Prioritization will be based on factors such as cargo load, vessel size (PC/UMS), and historical toll contributions. This policy aims to reward shipowners who invest in sustainable technologies and aligns with global regulatory efforts to reduce maritime emissions.
